The most obvious dental emergencies are injuries resulting in extreme pain and damage, such as loose or knocked-out (avulsed) teeth. However, there are a number of other dental issues that are considered emergencies and should be addressed immediately. A persistent toothache is considered an emergency, especially if it is accompanied by a fever. If a crown or filling becomes loose or falls out, this also warrants a trip to the dentist.
If your tooth has been knocked out in an accident, there are a few basic rules you should follow to protect your mouth and ensure the best outcome for your smile:
1. Schedule an emergency appointment as soon as you can, ideally within 2 hours of the emergency. You can also stop by our office for a walk-in appointment.
2. Recover your tooth, if possible. After rinsing it gently with warm water, replace the tooth in its socket, or put it in a small baggie of cold milk.
3. Treat bleeding, if present, by using sterile gauze or cotton and gentle pressure. Bleeding should slow or stop within an hour or two.
4. Pain and discomfort can be addressed with over-the-counter NSAID medication, such as Tylenol or Ibuprofen. Do not use aspirin, because it can interfere with blood clotting. Ice can be applied externally to treat swelling and pain.
Follow these steps and make sure that you get to our office as soon as you can for expert treatment and a permanent solution.
