Dental crowns are false teeth that are built of a durable porcelain ceramic material. They are designed to cover up and protect your damaged tooth after the decayed material has been removed. By doing so, dental crowns prevent further damage and decay. In addition, your crown will be built to look just like your natural tooth, restoring both your bite and your smile.
Dental crowns are commonly used to treat large cavities that can’t be repaired with a filling and may also be recommended to replace an old, large or worn-out filling. Crowns are also the best way to treat cracked or broken teeth, and are often used to protect a tooth after root canal therapy.
More rarely, dental crowns are used for purely cosmetic purposes. For example, if a tooth is deemed too small to be treated with a cosmetic dental treatment like a veneer or dental bonding, a crown could be used to cover it up and restore the appearance of your smile.
The crown placement process takes two appointments over a period of a few weeks. At your first appointment, your tooth will be prepared for your dental crown. Dr. Marquez will begin by cleaning your mouth and numbing the treatment area. Once your mouth is numb, she will remove damaged and decayed enamel, then shape the remaining tooth structure into a stable platform to which the crown can be attached.
Then, Dr. Marquez will take impressions and images of your teeth, which will be sent to our partner dental lab where your crown will be created. Once your crown and sent to us, you’ll come in for your final appointment. Dr. Marquez will check the fit of the crown and trim it to make minor adjustments, if necessary. Then, your crown will be permanently attached to your tooth with dental cement, completing the procedure.
