Partial dentures are usually recommended if you've lost a small number of your teeth, but the rest of your mouth is in good condition. A metal and plastic framework attaches to surrounding healthy teeth to hold one or more false teeth in place. They are often used temporarily until you can get a dental bridge or dental implants, but some patients opt to keep partial dentures as a long-term treatment for their missing teeth.
In contrast, full dentures are used only if you've lost most or all of your natural teeth. They use an acrylic base which rests directly on your gums, and is held in place with friction This acrylic base supports a full arch (row) of teeth.
Yes. Your full dentures are designed to fit precisely onto your gums, so they can’t be placed over your teeth. Any remaining teeth must be extracted before your dentures are placed and fitted. This is why full dentures are only recommended if you have lost most or all of your teeth, or if the majority of your teeth are seriously damaged.
Whether you’re getting full or partial dentures at Altamar Dental Studio, the process is quite similar. If you require tooth extractions to prepare for full dentures, you’ll have to have your teeth removed before the denture process can begin.
Dr. Marquez will begin by taking dental impressions and images of your teeth and gums. This information is then sent to a third-party dental lab, where a test denture made of wax or plastic will be made.
Once the test dentures arrive at our office, you’ll try it on and see if it fits properly. If there are any issues with fit or comfort, Dr. Marquez will make adjustments and request a new set of test dentures. This process may need to be repeated multiple times.
After your test dentures fit perfectly, Dr. Marquez will give approval for your final set of dentures to be manufactured. Then, your full or partial dentures will arrive at our office for your final try-on. After this, you’ll be sent home with your new dentures, as well as set of instructions about how to care for them properly.
